You may have heard that you should not purchase a plasma TV because it will only last maybe 3-5 years. And that's often told by salespeople at the electronics store where you're trying to buy a flat screen TV!

It's hard to believe that supposedly informed salespeople could be such purveyors of misinformation, but it happens every day. Saying a plasma screen will only last a few years is kind of like saying that if you buy a car you'll have to fill it with gas every few hours. It is true, isn't it, that if you drive your car without stopping, you'll have to fill the tank every six hours or so. But we don't run our vehicles 24/7/365, just as we don't do that with a TV.

Current plasma TV's now have a 60,000 hour life rating--the same as most LCD televisions. Even if you never turn off your TV, that adds up to almost 7 years. But nobody does that, at least not for home use. If you run a plasma screen for 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, then 60,000 hours adds up to over 20.5 years! And face it--most of us figure we aren't going to keep a TV that long to begin with.

And no, the gas in a plasma screen cannot be "recharged" like a lot of misinformed people will tell you. But after 20+ years of service, most folks will feel like they got their money's worth from a plasma TV!
